New York never ceases to provide woah moments of capital A-Awesomeness. The first time I attended the ASMEs I couldn’t believe I was a) at the Waldorf Astoria dahling, b) in the same room as Graydon Carter, Helen Freakin’ Gurley Brown, Martha Stewart and c) hello, Ms Wintour. I could go on (and on). But tonight, the
Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards Took The Cake: The
Vignellis!
Michael Bierut (yay Michael - he won the Design Mind Award)!
Luke Hayman (who reminded me I owe him a beer - or 6)
Cameron Sinclair (he founded Architecture for Humanity - jeezy!)!
Scott Stowell (yes, of GOOD magazine, and the rest)!
Tom Kundig (I covet every one of his buildings)!
Karim Rashid! Sigi and Masamichi of
Antenna Design - perfection. And beautiful, humble, extraordinary Charles Harrison, the designer of the
Viewmaster, along with hundreds of other household products for Sears over his three decades there as an industrial designer. So great to run into
Jeremy too, whose building, from the prefab exhibit at MOMA, is being
thrown away (!?). But most,
most amazed/impressed/inspired by the
OLIN partnership win for Landscape Design - when you look at the scope of their work, and the impact it makes on so many many peoples lives in especially urban spaces (ever visited Columbus Circle? Battery Park? Bryant Park? You can thank them for the experience): so inspiring. I’ll have this design-dork grin on my face for more than a bit. Ay. Yi. A colleague said “Look at you, all starstruck” - yeah, I am, and hope I always will be: I think it’s too easy to not be amazed and thrilled by the people you meet and the situations you find yourself in here. Pinch me.Then again, give me a minute to just enjoy this.
