supernice

This is Vanessa's personal tumblrzine, for family and friends everywhere. I like all sorts of stuff, and I like to share.

If you'd like to see my work work, skip on over to www.vanessaholden.com.

In my real life you can find me at vanessaholden[at]mac[dot]com; in studios and meetings & offices quite (but not too) often; most happily at the beach; at Pearl Paint buying stuff for a project; at La Colombe or The Adore, & sometimes (just quietly) at Beard Papa, but then I don't like to talk about that particular addiction.

We are put on this planet only once, and to limit ourselves to the familiar is a crime against our minds.
— Amen. Roger Ebert, from whom a comment like this seems kinda unfamiliar, but then I don’t know that much about him (via faunafrailty)

These ladies rule. So great up on the roof last night: some rain, a sunset, smashed plates, skateboards, bum videos, coke after 10pm n’all.

These old media are temporary. Brands, however, are permanent. The good news is that, in the Internet, we finally have a medium that’s permanent. On to the future! It’s actually easy to figure out what to do now, to draw a map. So easy. Here it is: Now is the time to start doing work online that sticks around for a really long time, to see the Internet as the one constant in a brand’s life, to realize that every action a brand takes will exist forever online, that it is in fact the foundation of every bit of communication and strategy your brand or client does. It’s time to step up and be proper agents for your brand, and build a modern, tangible future for it.
Benjamin Palmer of Barbarian Group. But this word ‘brand’: there has to be a better word/more specific definition … it’s too easily applicable to too too many things … and they’re potentially much, much more ephemeral than one might care to admit (via chetgulland)

Excited for The Tale of Despereaux in the fall … “There’s so many wonderful things in life to be afraid of if you just learn how scary they are”: I’m all for tales of fearlessness and following your dreams, for kids and everyone really. All the better that it’s an adaptation of a Newbery Medal winning book - Yas and I are working our way through some of them now; I think Despereaux will be added to the list for summer vacation …

A sculpture to walk on. And dive from. The architect responsible, Fredrik Pettersson, has produced a creation standing on discreet legs one metre above the surface of the sea, a hundred metres out from the shore.

Love the ones you can. Touch the ones you can reach. Let the others go.
— Kind of meh quote from Ian McEwan, who writes much, much more interesting sentences than these. He is also most definitely English: not an ounce of American about him. I’ve powered through Atonement, Saturday and Amsterdam in the past few weeks - but Enduring Love is proving to be a bit of a struggle - I think because I can’t shake the Rhys Ifans connection …(via soupsoup/ mascarah)

Happy Birthday Gigi! - my Nana is 87(!) today! Up until The Squirrel and Harps came along she was Nana Holden , but since she’s her great-grandmother, The Squirrel started calling here G-G, and Gigi has stuck: so much more exotic, no, and never too late to be glamorous, right? I love love love my Nana, and the kids do too - one of the seriously tough things about being here in New York is that she’s all the way there in the ‘bra. I think about her all the time, and I miss her a lot. A phone call every week or a couple of weeks visit a year are very poor substitutes for dropping by any old time. Sigh …
